The development of Generative Artificial Intelligence (Generative AI) is transforming visual creation through its ability to rapidly generate, reconstruct, and modify images from textual and visual instructions. In Indonesia, this development creates new opportunities for digitizing traditional craft motifs while simultaneously raising concerns regarding communal ownership, authenticity, cultural exploitation, and the preservation of philosophical meanings. This study aims to analyze the economic opportunities and ethical-legal challenges associated with the use of Generative AI for the digitalization of Indonesian traditional craft motifs. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed using content analysis of secondary data published primarily during 2019–2026, including peer-reviewed journal articles, creative economy reports, policy documents, and relevant regulations. Data were analyzed through data reduction, thematic categorization, data display, and conclusion drawing. The analysis identifies three principal findings. First, Generative AI accelerates visual exploration, motif variation, prototyping, and design adaptation. Second, the technology may reduce design exploration costs, expand innovation capacity among creative MSMEs, and accelerate the commercialization of motifs across digital markets. Third, such acceleration increases risks of cultural appropriation, blurred boundaries between inspiration and reproduction, and tensions between individual copyright regimes and the communal nature of Traditional Cultural Expressions. The study concludes that Generative AI should be positioned as a human–AI co-creation instrument governed by cultural-source traceability, community consent, attribution, and benefit-sharing principles.Downloads
